KEEPING IT ALL UNDER CONTROL As your trees grow older and start to produce more, you also want to keep them in good health, not only free from parasites and predators but also from weeds and hosts that may cause harm in the longer run, especially in a fertile ecosystem that allows new kinds of vegetation to develop. |
The first and most common issue is ivy that will colonize trunks by sticking or even rooting onto the bark, sometimes pumping the nutriments and oxygen out until the tree eventually dies.. This new intruder may look nice and decorative but it must be removed completely and also rooted out from the ground, as early as possible. |
Another frequent host in humid environments is the lichen, that builds up naturally on the bark and can spread up more or less quickly in the branches, to eventually suffocate them until they dry out, especially on old trees. Here again it’s a good idea to visit your land once or twice a year to keep things tidy, preferably with a brass metal brush (not iron which could damage the bark). |
