Hydroculture is a very old technique, it was already used for the “suspended gardens” in Babylon.. It’s only in the 1980’s that it became commercial, with systems using blown clay as substrate and designed for offices or homes to easily grow and maintain indoor plants without too much maintenance work. |
But the substrate can also be lava fragments, coconut fibers, or any organic material that would leave the top of the roots in contact with air, while the bottom remain immersed in water. With a few items that can be found in garden centers, it is very easy to germinate seeds and grow plants at home, and since there is no earth or soil involved, it can also solve the problem of insects and parasites. |
Our plant/seed specialist has been growing tropical plants at home (like this 4 months old mango) already since his teenage, starting from the seeds of fruits he regularly consumes. His next challenge will be going live outdoor, with lava instead of clay, in tropical climate to eventually grow the fruits not just the plants. |
